UK’s first autonomous zero-emission bus service begins in Oxfordshire

The UK's first zero-emission autonomous bus service goes live to the public for the first time today (02 March) in Oxfordshire.

Operated by First Bus and fully accessible for wheelchair and pushchair users, the 15-seater fully electric bus will carry passengers around Milton Park - a business, science and technology park near Didcot and Abingdon - which is home to more than 250 companies and 9,000 employees.

Services will run every 15 minutes between 7am and 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. A qualified safety driver is on board the bus at all times to provide a personalised service and information to passengers.

Branded Mi-Link, the bus service is part of a 5-year project called MultiCAV - comprising a range of experienced and diverse organisations led by First Bus, as well as Fusion Processing Ltd, Oxfordshire County Council, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), Zipabout and Milton Park.

The £4.3m project has been funded by a £3m grant from the Department for Transport’s Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) through Innovate UK.

Journeys further afield to Didcot Parkway train station, including a service using a larger electric bus capable of carrying up to 28 passengers, are expected to be added later in the year.

The Mi-Link journey planner tool - developed by Zipabout to support the service - is the first in the world to use WhatsApp for autonomous bus messaging.

With no cumbersome app to download, they can receive real-time information about all the Mi-Link services through their favourite channels, including WhatsApp or SMS.

“Using the data and insight from the Zipabout Platform, local authorities and operators can now better understand transport demand in the area, paving the way to helping people get to and around Milton Park more sustainably.”

  • The electric Mellor Orion E bus, which has been converted to autonomous operation by Fusion Processing Ltd, represents a major step forward in technology for the bus industry as this state-of-the-art bus welcomes passengers on board for the first time. It will operate route 001 within Milton Park from the new Bee House central hub to the Milton Feast food market area in the west of the business park.

It gives full details of the Milton Park Circular 001 bus service and is a vital part of the project’s aim to encourage less individual car use by making it easy to plan and undertake sustainable journey options.
  • Customers can plan their journeys and track all their local bus and train services, as well as hiring conventional and electric bicycles, directly from the planner which also provides comprehensive walking and cycling routes.
  • Electric buses represent a huge reduction in terms of emissions and also tackle more than just air pollution, they provide a smoother ride and are virtually silent when running, helping to create quieter, calmer, safer streets for the local area.
  • Research partner UWE Bristol will undertake a programme of activities to study the experiences of passengers and drivers of the bus as well as understanding the reactions of other users of Milton Park. UWE research will use these findings as part of an assessment as to how public transport networks might change if autonomous technology is applied in the Didcot area and more widely.
