First Bus York Ian McDonald 1

Longest-serving First Bus driver in York reaches last stop after 52 years

The longest-serving driver with First Bus in York is finally stepping out from behind the steering wheel.

Ian McDonald, 70, is retiring after nearly 52 years with the company and its predecessors.

He joined the business when it was then West Yorkshire Roadcar in September 1974, long before deregulation of the bus industry in 1986.

Ian recalls when he started, the lowest fare was 2p. “I've loved doing my job all these years,“ he said. “I've seen a lot of changes. Back then 99 per cent of customers paid cash plus we did busy works buses, Rowntree’s, Terry's, Armstrong, REME and we did Scarborough, Bridlington, Hull and Harrogate.”

Colleagues gathered at the First Bus offices on George Hudson Street as Ian finished his last shift to surprise him with gifts and a send-off in the canteen.

Joel Bradley, General Manager of First Bus in York, said: “Ian has been an inspiration to everyone in the depot. His love of the job as a bus driver speaks for itself but this time had to come and we wish him all the best for a relaxing retirement.”

Ian began his career in the industry as a conductor. Changes led to a decision to get behind the steering wheel and he’s been there ever since. “I like meeting people, speaking to them and helping out.”

In his early days Ian was based in Barbican Road which at the time was the biggest single span bus depot in the country. The morning ‘run out’ as buses left for service was very different to the all-electric fleet.

He said: “I love the cameras on the new electric buses, much easier than using wing mirrors. And they’re a lot lighter to drive with barely any noise. Customers like that and those waiting at the stop.”

Ian, who lives in New Earswick, said he has hiking, hill walking and fishing to keep him occupied. “I will miss the job a lot but I promised my wife and the family I will not carry on past 70!”
