First Bus and Bulls boost wheelchair user travel confidence

First Bus has teamed up with Bradford Bulls to help local people with mobility assistance needs travel with greater confidence on the city’s bus network.

A group including manual and electric wheelchair users and those with mobility scooters met at a bus stop close to the Bartercard Odsal Stadium to take part in the bus operator’s Safer Independent Travel Training programme.

The session demonstrated how wheelchair users can safely board and alight a bus and the support provided by drivers, how to obtain a Mobility Scooter Pass and practical information designed to increase confidence when travelling by bus.

Members of the First Bus team and Bulls also had the opportunity to experience getting on board in a wheelchair and the ease of manoeuvring into the designated space.

Mubs Mahmed, Social Value Manager at First Bus, said: “Our drivers receive full training in how to support customers with mobility needs but these sessions let everyone see travelling on the bus from both sides.

“It can support people with mobility needs to access employment, education, healthcare, leisure and other vital services, while also helping to reduce social isolation and transport barriers.”

The event forms part of a partnership throughout this season between First Bus and Bradford Bulls that aims to Improve accessibility awareness in using public transport.

Ian Stafford, Commercial Manager of Bradford Bulls added: “We must give a special shout out to the drivers who were absolutely fantastic. I learnt so much from them and the wheelchairs users which has given our team real insight we will use in supporting people with mobility needs.” 

First Bus is continuing to deliver further programmes and benefits through its community learning bus model in Bradford and the wider West Yorkshire region.

“Working with community partners such as Bradford Bulls is important in helping us reach people who may face greater barriers to travel and deliver support that has a real and meaningful impact within local communities,” said Mubs Mahmed.
