First Bus York Service 11 2

First Bus increases frequency connecting villages to York city centre

  • Changes come into effect on Sunday 31 May
  • Service 10 between Poppleton and Stamford Bridge to run every 30 minutes
  • Service 11 between Bishopthorpe and Heworth/Ashley Park to double trips to twice an hour

First Bus is investing in more frequency to improve connections from Stamford Bridge, Dunnington, Bishopthorpe, Burnholme and Nether Poppleton to York city centre.

From Sunday 31 May, Service 10 will run every 30 minutes (an increase from the current 40 minutes) Monday through to Saturday daytime, with Sundays remaining unchanged. Journeys on Service 11 will double in frequency six days a week, running every 30 minutes from Monday to Saturday, an increase from the current hourly trips.

Stephen Moyle, General Manager at First Bus in York said: “We’re sure residents living in these villages surrounding the city and districts along the routes will welcome the better connections this will bring to work, education and leisure.

“Our team has looked carefully at passenger usage and service performance, as well as listening to feedback from customers and local councillors, and we believe this improvement in frequency will help deliver reliability and encourage more trips and more people to use the services.”

Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see bus operators investing in York and this decision reflects the raft of bus improvements we are delivering across the city.

“It’s really positive news for the communities, high streets and attractions that these routes serve, including residents in Poppleton, Bishopthorpe, Holgate, South Bank and Dunnington, plus Bishy Road shops and York Racecourse amongst others.”

Cllr Ravilious added: “More frequent bus services attract more passengers, leading to fewer cars on the road, fewer traffic jams and more reliable buses – and that means both bus passengers and those who need to drive have better journeys.

“With £1 fares for young people, free travel for concessionary pass holders and tap-on-tap-off fares, it’s a great time to try the new services.”

In addition to the commercial decision to increase frequency on the routes, funding from City of York Council will continue to support journeys on service 11 between Bishopthorpe and Stonebow after 8.00pm and daytime trips round the Southbank Loop (stops: Balmoral Terrace, Queen Victoria Street and Campleshon Road) between Monday and Saturday. Funding from Government also supports certain off-peak and weekend journeys on service 10.
